Link Building Basics

Today I have a special article for you from Jason Storm, an SEO link building expert who has some great link building strategies for you.

Link Building Basics

Two of the three big search engines (Google and Yahoo) place a large importance on one way links to determine rankings. Each link to your site is like a vote and the more votes you have, the higher you will rank.

In this article I will be sharing with you some important info on link building and some strategies to help your one way link building.

Before we get started, it's important to understand the fundamentals...

Beginning with the very basics, a link is a way of navigating from one webpage to another. An 'internal link' is a link within the same website. An 'external link' takes you from a webpage in one website to a webpage in another website. The term 'backlink' means when another website links to yours.

There are 4 different types of links:
------------------------------------------------------
URL Link - This is simply a website url that is a link.
Text Links (aka static links) - This is the most common type of link (when you click on a word or phrase and it is a link)
Image Links - An image link is simply an image that you click on to navigate to another webpage.
Dynamic Links - These types of links are in another programming language called Javascript and while they also take you from one webpage to another, they have 'extra codes' to perform special functions.
(these types of links can appear in many different forms)

It is important to be able to recognize these types of links, even if you are not familiar with web design and programming. You don't have to memorize the codes, just learn to identify each type of link.

What types of links should you get?
------------------------------------------------------
There are 2 types of links that you can get:

One-way links - A one-way link is when another website links to you and you don't link back to them.
Reciprocal links - A reciprocal link is when a website links to you and you link back to them.

One-way links are more valuable in the eyes of the search engines. However, each link has its own individual value based on: how relevant it is to your site, the text in and around the link, how much authority the website that links to you has, etc.

Also, it's important to know that you can get links that have 'no value' in the eyes of the search engines, but they bring you hundreds or thousands of targeted visitors...

Generally speaking, the more websites that link to you the better. However, building links takes time and energy and if you focus on getting 'high-quality links', you will get a bigger return on your investment. 50 high quality links can be much more valuable from a search engine optimization perspective than 1000 'low quality links'.

What's a high quality link? - Links that brings you Page Reputation (which shows the search engines that other related websites consider you to be important), and links that give you PageRank. Sometimes both at once, sometimes not...

To get high rankings on your website, you want to obtain links for targeted keywords. For this reason it's necessary to start with Keyword Research.

If your website is about "bird watching", the first step is to 'do keyword research' and find out which keyword you should aim for. While you could just start getting text links for the keyword phrase "bird watching", if no one is searching for that - you won't get any visitors. There's no sense in ranking on the first page for a keyword that no one is looking for.

Or, if there is a lot of competition for that keyword, you might want to pick a "lower hanging fruit".

Another important part is making sure your page is optimized for the keyword you are targeting. If you are focused on building one way links to your site but the links have anchor text which doesn't even appear on your page, you will likely be wasting your time. (I say likely assuming that you have some competition for your targeted keywords, if there is no competition then it doesn't matter).

In this case a site that has fewer one way links but much better on-page optimization is likely to rank higher. Or maybe you are building one way links to your site but they are just url links and not anchor-text links. Another site that has less links than you but better quality (anchor-text) will be likely to rank higher.

Ideally, you want to build a lot of one way links that have anchor text which includes the primary and secondary keywords that your page is optimized for. Google also uses Latent Semantic Indexing which (in a nutshell) means that they study the synonyms of the keywords on your page. This is to prevent spammers from just loading every second word with their keywords. Their algorithm looks at all the words on your page and how they relate to each other.

So, there's no sense in building one way links if your content is not worthwhile. You want to optimize your pages for your visitors first. Then, you can go through and "sprinkle" your keywords. Then, go out and get one way links with the anchor-text of your targeted keywords, ideally getting most of these links from websites that are related to yours.

Yes, Google also looks at the relationship between your website's content and the websites that link to your content. Fewer links to your business site from other business sites will be more valuable link-wise than more links coming to you from a site about video games..

Don't make these link building mistakes:
------------------------------------------------------
Don't spend all your time getting one way links from sites with no Page Rank. One or two links from related Page Rank 5+ sites can be worth more than 100 links from sites with no PR.
Be careful about buying links or you can get banned. Especially be careful about Site Wide links. If your website only has a few backlinks one day and the next day you have hundreds, Google will see this and penalize you.

Don't spend all your time building one way links that are url-links, you want to get anchor-text links.

Make sure the links you get are actually worth something, don't get "No-Follow" links.

Happy Link Building!

Designing/Re-designing A SEO Friendly Web Site

Many of you are just starting out creating your first web site and beginning your journey into internet e-commerce. I put together this quick list for those of your just getting started of things to keep in mind from a marketing perspective as you build your site. Keep in mind that you can design the best looking award winning site but if you don't have any traffic coming to the site you won't make any sales.

With that in mind keep these points in mind when creating or redesigning your web site:

1. Create Search Engine-Friendly Content
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Be sure your site is full of Keyword Rich html text content that pertains to the benefits of your web site product or service. Remember that text embedded in images or Flash cannot be read, so make sure keep your most important keywords in html text. Also try and use your keywords as headings, and hyperlinks in plain text form. Graphical buttons may be more appealing for your overall design but be sure to include hyperlinks in the HTML text as well. Never try to hide keywords or text by making it the same color as the page background or shrinking it so it can't be seen. That can get you blacklisted! Make sure the keywords you wish to rank high for are used frequently in the page copy but not forced.

2. Choose Your Keywords Wisely
-----------------------------------------------------------------
This is one of the most important steps in SEO. First start by writing down all the terms that you would type into a search engine if you were looking for your web site, product or service. You can also use keyword research services to investigate word and phrase variations. Wordtracker, KeywordDiscovery, and the Google AdWords suggestion tool are good starting points. (you can google those names to find the web sites). Once you have a brainstorm list put together, then put those keywords into an order of importance. These keywords should then be used in your SEO for your site and in the visible text of your web site where appropriate.

3. Get Others to Link to Your Site
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Backlinks are a major key to high search engine ranking these days. The trick is to seek out web sites that have high page rank with Google and then request link trades with those web sites. There is no short cut to developing these backlinks. You have to diligently seek them out and build those relationships. The more unique your site and content and the more value you can provide to your link partner the more apt they will be to trade with you.
* Stay away from link farms that say they will create hundreds of backlinks to your site for you. Usually these pages have low page rank and will not provide you with much value.
Here are some other areas to create back links:

* Submit to free press release services
* Submit to reputable business directories such as Yahoo! and Business.com
* Create a free blog and link back to your main web site
* Ask your clients and business partners to link to your site.
* Participate in relevant forums and discussion boards with a link in your signature
* Submit original articles to article directories
* Get involved in social media and bookmarking

These three points are a general guideline to follow when getting started with your first web site, or when re-designing you existing site. There is a TON more in my Dynamic Web Marketing Secrets E-book.

Choosing the Perfect Domain Name

I got a ton of emails from people asking about how to choose a Domain Name...so I had to expand a little on that last email with the qualities that make up a great domain name.

Choosing a good domain name is vital to the success or failure of your business. Just think about how important location is to an offline business? If you do not have a good location, you are likely not going to get many visitors. However if you set up a Ski Shop in the middle of a desert, you're probably not going to get much walk in traffic. The same holds true for a great domain name!

Here's how to choose a great domain name:

Easy to Remember
A good domain name must be easy to remember. A easy to remember domain name helps to ensure that your customer will remember how to find you when they get ready to buy. A great domain name is easy to remember and straight forward to type. Avoid complexity and avoid initials when possible.

The Shorter The Better
Twenty characters is the maximum that you should use for a good domain name, ten is even better. A long and complicated domain name is not going to help you. Your best bet is to keep it short and sweet. A great domain name is less than ten characters; a good domain name is less than twenty characters. A bad domain name goes over twenty characters. If you love your long domain name, then consider purchasing a short domain name that's easy to remember and a long one for search engine optimization.

Choose The Right Extension
There are several domain extensions available to you such as .com, .net, .org, .tv, .info, .gov and so on. The .com domain name extension is the best by far, because it is the most widely used and easiest for someone to remember. In fact if you have a .net name someone will usually type in .com by accident once in a while. A domain name .org is typically used by not-for-profit organization and educational websites. The .info extensions are generally used for informational websites.

Easy to Spell
A great domain name is easy to spell. USe only words that are easy to pronounce, have a good combination of words or letters that are used in every day language, and does not contain foreign words that may be difficult to non-native speakers.

Describe the Benefit
A good domain name should be descriptive and tell the benefit of your site or product. In other words, when your visitors, customers, or potential customers see your domain name they should instantly be able to tell what they are going to get or find on your site.

Don't Use Fancy Symbols
Try not to use hyphens or other special characters within your domain name. Even if your domain name is memorable, many people will not pay attention to or remember the symbols, which could lead them to someone else's website AHHHHH!

Doing the Google Shuffle

Did you do the dance last week?

I received SO many phone calls from clients last week that I had to stop what I was doing and write you a quick e-mail. Here's what happened...

About every 2 months or so Google does a "shuffle of the deck". This happens when Google changes their page rank algorithm, and updates the page rank for sites across the internet. Google's page rank is one major factor in their algorithm that determines where your site places in the search results for keyword searches.

Well this last "shuffle" was a doozy...it caught many of my clients unawares and dropped some of them completely out of the top 10, 30 and even 100 search rankings for their keywords...MINE INCLUDED!!!

You may have seen my e-mail a few days ago where I was touting the success of my achieving the number one ranking for my e-commerce web site in Google for my keywords...well only 1 week after that e-mail the shuffle happened and I disappeared from the top rankings for that exact same keyword! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

This is the exactly why I tell my clients that SEO is not an exact science and the search engines are not static. They are ever changing and require consistent monitoring and work to achieve and stay in the top rankings for your chosen keywords.

One note of good news is that one of my clients (and only one so far) called me the other day to ask me "what the heck was going on?". I was just getting ready to launch into my speech about the google shuffle when she continued to say that she received 3 orders that week that originate from Google! (previously she had received none) She did some searching and found that after the "shuffle" her web site was coming up in the top ten rankings for some of her keywords, and now customers were finding her in Google searches and purchasing her products!!! She was ecstatic about her new results!!!

So, the Google shuffle isn't always all bad. The lesson is that the shuffle is just one more thing to keep in mind in your overall SEO campaign. Know it's coming, keep your eye out for it and then react and adjust as necessary when it happens.

Sincerely,
Your friend and consultant

Matt Man
